After his impressive show at the Music City Challenger and a rise in rankings to become India’s top-ranked singles player, Somdev Devvarman made a surprising exit in Round 1 of the Men’s Qualifying Singles at the USD 50,000 JSM Challenger in Champaign-Urbana (Illinois, USA). Seeded second, Somdev lost 3-6 4-6 to local favourite Lester Cook on Tuesday, November 11.

Somdev, a two-time US National College Champion (2007 & 2008), turned pro a few months ago. While he has shown a lot of promise, he needs to become more consistent to succeed in the highly competitive ATP men’s singles circuit.

Somdev has progressed in the doubles (though this bit of news doesn’t really make us feel better).
