In an interview with Times of India, World Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist Abhinav Bindra talks about the possibility of a new challenge to motivate himself to pick up the gun again. Having reached the pinnacle of the 10m air rifle discipline, the 26-year old has set his sight on the 50m 3 positions discipline.

Here’s what Abhinav said during the interview with ToI:
“There is a possibility that I might take up 50m 3 position - which is part of the Olympics. I will do it for fun and for pleasure and if I find a fancy for it, I will do it completely. The first step is to just reintroduce myself to shooting and see if I enjoy it. I also have to train and see whether I have any talent for it before going for competitions. I think it will be a good way of regaining my motivation for the sport.”

Update (November 16, 2008): Abhinav to continue in 10m air rifle discipline; to do an Obama on Indian shooting

    Thats interesting :)
It’ll be great of the stupid IOA do not mount too much of pressure on him.

I suggest that he should do the practise on the president of IAO
Jokes apart, I salute this chap for his dedication in spite of being born with golden spoon

Raises the an important question. That of motivation… I wonder what keeps greats like Sergie Bubka going? By my count it was 35 world records before he called it quits. And that too 13 years after his only Olympic gold in ‘88. Anyways as far as we are concerned its a medal prospect lost for london… :(

The only positive is that Gagan Narang is now World Champ in the 10m air rifle and hopefully he will do well at 2012. By then, let’s pray that Abhinav should have shaped into a good shooter in the 50m discipline.

I dont think Abhinav will throw away all the years of hard work just like this. He has a good set of advisers and I am sure they will stop him from taking any rash decisions. He has just scaled Everest and there is reason to lack motivation. I guess this is just a passing phase.

I somehow feel Narang’s rise will keep Bindra interested. This could develop into a very healthy rivalry making it a win win for Indian shooting

Avnish, we all hope this is just a temporary thing. I shall be following anything and everything Abhinav says to the media to see where this is leading to.
