Indian judokas have participated in all editions of the Olympic Games since 1992 Barcelona. Here’s the list:
2008 Beijing
Tombi Khumujam Devi, who hails from Manipur, clinched a berth in the women’s 48 kg judo event at the Beijing Games by winning the bronze in the Asian championship. However her stint lasted only for two and a half minutes. Ana Hormigo of Portugal ousted the Indian judoka out during the preliminary round itself. The other Indian participant Divya Tewar lost to Cuba’s Yalennis Castillo in the preliminary round, and was then beaten by Kazakhstan’s Sagat Abikeyeva in the first repechage.
2004 Athens
Akram Shah was the only judoka who qualified for the Games. He competed in the 60 kg category. Getting a bye in the first round, he lost to Khashbaatar Tsagaanbaatar of Mongolia in the second round. Tsagaanbaatar eventually won the bronze medal.
2000 Sydney
Brojeshwari Devi was the only judoka who qualified for the Sydney Olympics. She won her first two rounds and got a lot of attention but lost the next two rounds and bowed out of medal contention.
1996 Atlanta
The Indian contingent at barcelona had 4 judokas - 2 men i.e. Najib Aga and Narinder Singh and 2 women i.e. Sunith Thakur and Arti Kohli. None of them could go beyond the preliminary stage.
1992 Barcelona
The Indian contingent at Barcelona had 5 judokas - 4 men i.e. Narinder Singh, Rajinder Dhangar, Sandeep Byala and Cawas Billimoria and 1 women i.e. Sangeeta Mehta. Sandeep Byala lost in the second round while everyone else lost in their opening round.
