India’s Gagan Narang stamped his class in the shooting World Cup Finals in Bangkok on Wednesday by winning the men’s 10m air rifle gold in style equalling one World Record and creating another.
In the preliminary phase, Narang shot a perfect 600 out of 600 to equal the World record jointly held by Tavarit Majchacheep of Thailand and Denis Sokolov of Russia.
He then outclassed a strong field to win the gold with a World record total of 703.5. He broke the record total of 703.1 held by Austrian Farnik Thomas set in 2006 World Cup Final in Granada, Spain. While reigning World and Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra had opted to rest, Olympic silver and bronze medallists Zhu Qinan (702.3) of China and Henri Hakkinen (701.9) of Finland were in the fray and settled for the third and fourth places respectively. The former World champion Matthew Emmons of USA finished second with a score of 702.5.
Gagan, who had missed the Olympic final on the count-back with a 595, gave credit to mind trainer Vaibhav Agashe, sponsors Olympic Gold Quest and Air India, and to coaches Sunny Thomas and Laszlo Szucsak, for this victory.

He’s the only other shooter who didn’t disgrace himself at the Olympics. A real medal hope at London. We are really counting on him to deliver the goods in 2012
Yup shooting is one sport where we should definitely score if we want to improve on the medals tally.
Competing at the Olympcis with regard to Shooting is a different ball game. Frankly speaking our shooters (a majority) of them are just good enough to win medals at Commonwealth or Asian games. Our shooters need to buck up, handle pressure better when it comes to the Olympics. Gagan Narang is a medal prospect at 2012, not only because of his international exposure, he has the will & belief to win big tournaments (sadly lacking in other shooters) This World Cup win should be a stepping stone towards the Olympic medal dream.
Hey Nishanth, I guess that’s the reason why Gagan was grateful to mind trainer Vaibhav Agashe for this victory. He has been working closely with Indian shooters so that they can deliver in high pressure situations.
