India’s Thokchom Nanao Singh has won the gold medal in the 48-kg (Light Flyweight) class in the inaugural AIBA Youth World Championships at Guadalajara in Mexico. Here’s how the match panned out:
Round 1: Grigoriy Nikolaychuk of Russia started off well and led 3-1 before a flurry of blows from Thokchom to turn the round in his favour 4-3.
Round 2: Thokchom drives home the advantage with 3 punches to Grigoriy’s singular punch and leads 7-4 at the end of the round.
Round 3: It’s all Thokchom. 3-0 in this round.
Round 4: Grigoriy gets desperate but Thokchom stamps his class with 5 quick points to win the round 5-1.
Final Scoreline: India’s Thokchom Nanao Singh takes gold with a lop-sided win over Russia’s Grigoriy Nikolaychuk 15-5.

    Like the last comment thanks for pointing out it was live on the net… the Russian came out firing but Thokchom was composed and seemed like the one with the plan! Great talent for the future…

    @Yash
    I think the only way to follow sports in our country is through the net. Though the quality wasn’t as good as TV, I enjoyed the match as much.

    @Neil
    Thokchom is a character. Pocket-sized dynamo. And what a name.

    Must mention that I am really happy to have been able to have captured the screenshot with Thokchom Nanao Singh showing his medal to the camera because nowhere else on the net was I able to locate a picture of his. Am sure now many will follow once the laggardly Indian media picks up this piece of news.

    Yes… I doubt this will find a significant mention tomorrows papers, esp since an India Australia test series is on and one page is reserved (read bought out) by IPL! Sadly event he stadium was practically empty! Boxing not big in Mexico also I guess. Great site though! Keep up the good work! Saving Thokchom’s success from obscurity!

    Thakchom’s success continues the great boxing tradition of the north-east. He will follow in the footsteps of World Championship bronze -madallist Zoram Thanga and Asian Games champ Dingko Singh. The north-east is the other nursery of boxing talent after Bhiwani, and like the small twon in Haryana, is extremely neglected.

    I want to go to Bhiwani and do a video about the boxing tradition there. Let’s plan a trip.
