Thursday, October 30, 2008. The Indian challenge at the French Super Series 2008 ended in Round 1 itself. In men’s singles, the day started with Arvind Bhat’s loss to World #1 and top seed Chong Wei Lee of Malaysia 14-21 3-21. P Kashyap was the next to crash out with a 8-21 16-21 loss to Chinese Yi Lu. To round off an already bad day, national champion Chetan Anand suffered a straight-game defeat at the hands of World #3 and third seed Jin Chen of China 17-21 14-21. Chetan’s defeat brought the Indian challenge to a crushing end on the first day itself. Earlier, in women’s singles, Aditi Mutatkar squandered a game lead and lost to World #1 and third seed Mi Zhou of Hong Kong 21-17 11-21 9-21.
However, there was some respite for Indian badminton fans on an otherwise forgetful Thursday. The revised World Rankings saw India’s Chetan Anand climb to a career high rank of 15 owing to his fantastic performance at the Denmark Super Series.
